Online Therapy - Telehealth

Telehealth, also referred to as “online psychotherapy” or “telemedicine”, refers to the use of technology (usually phone or a video conferencing software) to provide therapy services. While telehealth is a newer mode of therapy, research shows that it can be just as effective as in-person therapy.

Telehealth is a great way of removing barriers to getting services. How do you know if online therapy is for you? It may be a good idea if you live somewhere rural where you cannot access in-person services easily, or if you are seeking a specialty that is not available near you (such as therapy in Mandarin, or art therapy). Maybe your days are very full and you require flexible scheduling. Perhaps you feel worried about the stigma of seeking help and would like to avoid waiting rooms.

Benefits of Telehealth:

  • Convenient scheduling

  • Saves you time and money you would otherwise spend on traveling to an office

  • Participate in therapy from the comfort of your own home - I meet you literally where you are!

  • More consistency in appointments

  • Ease of access - childcare, rush hour traffic, and other barriers are taken out of the equation

Drawbacks of Telehealth:

  • May not be appropriate for crisis situations or intensive trauma processing

  • Sessions require a strong internet connection to hold video sessions and your connection may not be secure

  • Depending on where you are during sessions, there may be unexpected interruptions

  • Art therapy interventions can be limited

I use the built-in Simple Practice telehealth software that is accessible via your Client Portal website or through an app on your phone or tablet. This platform is very secure and HIPAA compliant to keep your information confidential. Still not sure? Contact me to schedule a phone consult where we can talk about if online therapy is right for you.
